An Absolutely Loaded Question
All -
We have people with ten years of preps We have people with no preps. We have people who own a lot of ground, and farm it. We have people who are short on the rent check For an apartment in Anywhere, USA. We have people with pretty high level survival skills and People who would be shit out of luck if the power went out. So. You are limited to ten items other than the clothes on your back And the shoes on your feet. And you must own them already. Doesn't matter if it is 5,000 acres in Idaho Or a bug out bag. List your ten items. In terms of priority. The reason I'm saying this, Other than the fact of it being a loaded question, Is to separate fantasy From reality. scyth |

Re: An Absolutely Loaded Question
So, how about this:
1. Generators 2. Water Filters/Purifiers 3. Portable Toilets 4. Seasoned Firewood (About $100+ per cord; wood takes 6 - 12 mos. to become dried, for home uses.) 5. Lamp Oil, Wicks, Lamps 6. Coleman Fuel 7. Guns, Ammunition, Pepper Spray, Knives, Clubs, Bats & Slingshots 8. Hand-Can openers & hand egg beaters, whisks. 9. Honey/Syrups/white, brown sugars 10. Rice - Beans - Wheat, So this is an eye opener for me. I have numbers 2, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. But, surprisingly, I lack numbers 1, 3, 4 and 6. So among the first 10 (of 100 items that disappear in an emergency), I'm only batting 60%. So much for being prepared! |

Re: An Absolutely Loaded Question
My guesses right off, if it had to be:
1) water filter 2) bicycle 3) tent 4) sleeping bag 5) fire-starting stuff (matches or magnesium) 6) swiss army knife 7) 2-3 person inflatable boat 8) 22lr pistol & ammo 9) multiband radio 10) my measly gold+silver stash .....hard to say without making assumptions. .....I currently do not have #1 and #7. .....The gun and ammo I count as one item, cause one wouldn't make much sense without the other. .....I could strap all this stuff to the bicycle I have, but then,,,, the bicycle includes a whole subset of junk on its own--lights, a pump & patch kit for the tires, a mini-tool. That's the stuff that I normally carry around on the bike though. The bicycle lights and the radio also need batteries, but one set of batteries for each can go a couple months of actual use. ------- I guess if government melted down, then a bicycle would be useful for getting around on the empty roads. If you're dropped off in the middle of a wilderness area, then a bicycle's not good for much and I'd change that item to something else. PS: I've got a pet cat I'd also try to take along. Does the cat get ten items too? ;) -end- |
Re: An Absolutely Loaded Question
1. A good rifle<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
2. Five loyal friends with good rifles 3. Two small 4x4 p/u trucks 4. Lots of ammo. With this we can get anything else needed for survival. While this might seem callous and severe, it is the real world and it's what we will be dealing with in the near future. Be prepared. |

I can't compete with that list! Here goes:
Secluded cabin well or fresh water source rifle and ammo basic medical kit (with antibiotics) Multiband crank/solar radio Axe, sharpening stone and bucksaw Woodstove with cast iron frying pan Stabilized food (rice, beans, pasta, flour, cereals) 50 gallon drum and biodegradeable detergent (my washing machine!) my beer-making stuff I know you'll tell me I can't count, but technically 10 grains of rice could be considered items as well. Give me some poetic licence, will ya!?!?! |

a KNIFE.
Boots, and a KNIFE. With one good blade,I will carve shelter, food, and what ever else I need from the world beneath my feet. I can make, scrounge or trade for anything else I desire. . . . For crying out loud, did some guy list a friggin EGG BEATER as a survival item? an EGGBEATER? WTF are you thinking? |
Re: An Absolutely Loaded Question
chickens -- they can forage for themselves if needed and keep the family full of protien rich eggs with some left for barter.
guns and ammo for defense and hunting. traps and snares - for quietly gathering game at night. Books -- more importantly knowledge locked in the brain for medicinal and edible wilds. And transplanting edible near my house. Spices and lots of salt, for preserving and making that snared possum resemble food. wood and tools for making longbows -- my favorite hobby and they make silent hunting weopons -- good for trade. If I'm unemployed I'll need something to keep me busy. Bugout bag. Knives. seeds and shovel and my garden. camp stoves and lots of fuel. Spring near my house. I've dug it out so I can fill five gallon buckets |
